As of 2025, Microsoft has not officially supported a free upgrade Windows 7 to Windows 10 since the end of their special offer in 2016. However, there have been reports from users suggesting that the upgrade method still works for some people even after the official deadline.
Free Upgrade Method: Some users have successfully upgraded using their original Windows 7 license key during the installation process for Windows 10. This is not guaranteed, and you may still need to purchase a license if the key does not activate.
Recommended Steps for Upgrading Windows 7 to Windows 10
1. Check System Requirements:
- Ensure your hardware meets the minimum requirements to run Windows 10. You can find these on Microsoft's website. Generally, you'll need a 1 GHz processor, 1 GB RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit), and 16 GB of available hard disk space.
2. Obtain Windows 10 Installation Media:
- You can download the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool from the official Microsoft website. This tool will help you create a bootable USB drive or download an ISO file.
3. Prepare for Installation:
- Run the Media Creation Tool. Choose "Upgrade this PC now" if you are running it on the Windows 7 machine, or create installation media if you are preparing it on a different computer.
- Select the option “Keep personal files and apps” during the upgrade wizard to ensure your files and settings are preserved.
4. Upgrade Process:
- If you are performing the upgrade directly from the Windows 7 machine, follow the on-screen prompts.
- If you are using a bootable USB, boot from the USB drive, select your language and region, and choose to upgrade, again making sure to select the option to keep files and applications.
5. Activation:
- After the installation is complete, you may be prompted to enter a product key. If you have opted for the free method and have a valid Windows 7 key, try entering it. If it doesn’t work, you will need to purchase a new key.
6. Update Drivers and Software:
- Once Windows 10 is installed, make sure to install all necessary drivers particularly for graphics, network, and any peripherals. Check Windows Update for any additional updates.
7. Check for Windows Updates:
- After upgrading, check for updates through the Windows Update settings in order to receive the latest security patches and feature updates.
