Still possible to upgrade from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 for free?
Microsoft's official free upgrade offer ended in July 2016. However, they have quietly continued to allow free upgrades for users with genuine Windows 7 or Windows 8/8.1 licenses. This is primarily for accessibility reasons, but the technical check is still in place for everyone.
When you upgrade using the methods above, Microsoft's servers recognize your valid Windows 8 product key and grant a "digital entitlement" (or digital license) for Windows 10. This license is tied to your device's hardware (motherboard). You can even clean install Windows 10 later, and it will automatically reactivate without you needing to enter a key.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
Activation Problems: If Windows 10 doesn't activate automatically, go to Settings > Update & Security > Activation > Troubleshoot. The activation troubleshooter can often help link your digital license.
"Keep nothing" option: If you choose "Keep nothing" or perform a clean install, you will likely need to enter your original Windows 8 product key during the Windows 10 setup to activate it. The upgrade process first is what establishes the digital entitlement.
Driver Issues: After upgrading, some older hardware might need new drivers. Check Windows Update first, then visit your PC manufacturer's website for the latest Windows 10 drivers for your model.
By following these steps, you should be able to smoothly and successfully upgrade Windows 8 PC to Windows 10 for free. Enjoy the newer, more secure operating system
