Scrolling Down Caused a Complete, Unrecoverable System Freeze

My Windows 10 computer has developed a frightening issue where simply scrolling down in any application—whether it's a web browser, File Explorer, or a document editor—causes the entire system to freeze completely, requiring a hard reset by holding down the power button because nothing else responds, not even Ctrl-Alt-Delete. I've already updated my graphics drivers, checked for Windows updates, and tried running the system file checker, but nothing has resolved the problem, so I'm hoping someone can help me figure out if this is a known bug with a specific update or if there's a deeper hardware or driver conflict that I haven't uncovered yet.

Many browsers and apps allow disabling hardware acceleration in their settings. Turn this off to see if it alleviates the issue.

Sometimes the latest driver isn't the most stable. Use Device Manager to roll back to a previous driver version or download a different version directly from the manufacturer's site.

  • Hi Beverly, when a system freezes just from scrolling, I would first suspect the graphics driver, mouse/touchpad driver, or hardware acceleration rather than scrolling itself. Try updating or reinstalling the GPU driver, then test with hardware acceleration disabled in the browser or app where it happens most. If it freezes across all apps, also check temperatures and run a memory test, because a full lockup usually means a low-level driver or hardware issue.
