You're right to be concerned about securely erasing data from your camera's SD card. Simply deleting or formatting the card on the camera may not be enough to completely remove the data. Here are the steps to safely wipe camera SD card on computer (both Windows 10 and macOS):
Windows 10 Method
- Insert the SD card into your Windows 10 PC: Make sure the card is properly inserted into your computer's card reader or a USB adapter.
- Open File Explorer: Press the Windows key + E to open File Explorer.
- Find the SD card: In File Explorer, navigate to the location where your SD card is listed (usually under "This PC" or "Devices").
- Right-click the SD card: Right-click the SD card and select "Format."
- Select the quick format option: In the Format dialog box, select the "Quick Format" option and click "OK."
- Verify the format: The SD card will be formatted, and you may be prompted to verify the format.
macOS Method
- Insert the SD card into your Mac: Make sure the card is properly inserted into your Mac's card reader or a USB adapter.
- Open Disk Utility: Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
- Select the SD card: In the Disk Utility window, select the SD card from the list on the left.
- Click the "Erase" button: Click the "Erase" button in the top-right corner of the window.
- Select the "Quick Erase" option: In the Erase dialog box, select the "Quick Erase" option and click "Erase."
After wiping camera SD card on computer, your photos and data will be permanently erased and cannot be recovered. Make sure to test the card in your camera to ensure it's working properly.
