Running outdated or incompatible applications, especially after Windows updates.
The update timing makes compatibility or a changed dependency likely, but rolling Windows back should not be the first step. Record the exact Windows build and application versions, then confirm whether each publisher supports that Windows release and offers a patch. Run the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter for one affected application and test its recommended settings. Next inspect Event Viewer under Windows Logs > Application at the failure time for the faulting module, exception code, or missing runtime. Install current device drivers and any required Microsoft runtime only from Microsoft or the application publisher; do not download individual DLL files from third-party sites. Test the application in a clean boot to exclude antivirus, overlays, or startup-service interference. If it still fails and the publisher provides no supported build, Windows cannot guarantee reliable compatibility. Use a supported replacement or ask the publisher for a maintained version rather than permanently uninstalling security updates.
