Phantom battery drain when completely shut down

My laptop seems to lose a significant amount of battery charge even when it's completely shut down and unplugged, which feels like a phantom drain issue. I'll power it off with 80% battery, but when I turn it back on the next day, it's dropped to 60% with no waking or standby involved.

Disconnect all peripherals (USB drives, external monitors, etc.) before shutting down.

  • Hi, that amount of drain after a real shutdown is not normal. First test with `shutdown /s /f /t 0`; this bypasses Fast Startup for that shutdown. If the battery holds, disable Fast Startup under Power Options. I would also create a battery report with `powercfg /batteryreport` and compare the full-charge capacity with the design capacity. Check the BIOS for USB charging while powered off, Wake-on-LAN, or always-on USB settings. If it still loses 20% overnight after those are disabled, update the BIOS and run the manufacturer's battery diagnostic, because the battery itself may be worn or faulty.
