New OS install?

Slowly gathering the bits around me to do my first new build in over 10 years. I guess Windows 10 is the way to go, but what is the consensus on software for a new build? Go genuine, pay the money and have a hassle free life. Or download and buy a cheap key and hope you get lucky and get a retail version?

Any pitfalls with a new install that are to be avoided?

Windows 10 is still a solid choice, especially if you're more comfortable with it or if your hardware isn't fully compatible with Windows 11.
