My computer reboots randomly without warning and no overheating
Check RAM if the PC reboots randomly without warning or overheating.
Random PC boot failures can be one of the most frustrating issues to diagnose, as the inconsistency makes it difficult to pinpoint the root cause. Among the various hardware components that can trigger such behavior, faulty RAM (Random Access Memory) is one of the most common culprits. Because RAM is critical for system stability during the boot process, where the operating system and essential drivers are loaded into memory, even minor defects can cause intermittent failures, random reboots, or complete boot loops.
How to fix computer restart randomly without warning
1. Run Windows Memory Diagnostic
- Press Windows Key + R, type mdsched.exe
- Choose "Restart now and check for problems"
- Your PC will reboot and run memory tests automatically
- Results appear after login (check Event Viewer > Windows Logs > System, filter by "MemoryDiagnostics")
2. Physical Checks
Reseat RAM modules — remove and firmly reinstall them
- Test one stick at a time — if you have multiple sticks, try booting with just one to isolate the faulty module
- Try different slots — test each RAM slot on the motherboard
- Clean contacts — use isopropyl alcohol and a soft eraser on the gold contacts
If tests show errors, replace the faulty RAM stick. If no errors are found but problems persist, the issue could be:
- Power supply (common culprit for random reboots)
- Overheating (check CPU temperatures)
- Motherboard issues
- Loose connections
