If you want to convert mp4 to gif without installing extra software, you might wonder if the built-in Windows apps like Microsoft Paint and the Photos app can do the job. While these apps do not have a direct MP4-to-GIF button, you can still use them as part of a simple workaround.
Step 1: Trim your MP4 video with the Photos app
- First, open your MP4 file using the Photos app on Windows.
- Right-click your video file.
- Choose Open with → Photos.
- Select the video editing option.
- Trim the video to keep only the part you want.
Short clips work much better when you want to convert mp4 to gif, because GIF files can become very large if the video is too long.
Step 2: Extract frames from the video
Microsoft Paint itself cannot directly turn a video into a GIF, but you can use it to make small edits to individual images.
You can:
- Take screenshots from your video frames.
- Open those images in Paint.
- Edit or add text if needed.
- Save them as PNG or JPG files.
Step 3: Create an animated GIF
- After preparing your frames, you need a tool that can combine them into an animated GIF. Windows built-in apps alone do not currently provide a complete MP4-to-GIF conversion feature.
Advantages:
- Uses apps that are already available on Windows
- No paid software required
- No watermark
- Good for small personal projects
Disadvantages:
- It is not an automatic convert mp4 to gif solution
- Extracting frames manually can take time
- Better options exist if you need to convert many videos
