Required Tools

  • A functional spare computer

  • A USB drive with ≥4GB capacity

  • Ethernet cable or available Wi-Fi

Step 1: Create an Erase Boot Drive on the Spare Computer

  • Obtain the Windows installation image via Microsoft's official Media Creation Tool.

  • Utilise third-party software to write the downloaded ISO file to the USB drive, creating a bootable drive.

Step 2: Configure Lenovo Laptop to Boot from USB Drive

  • Insert the prepared boot drive into the powered-off Lenovo laptop.

  • Power on the device and immediately press the F12 key repeatedly to access the Lenovo Boot Options menu.

  • Use the arrow keys to select the USB drive option, then press Enter to enter the erasure tool interface.

Step 3: Execute Secure Hard Drive Wipe

  • Follow on-screen prompts to select the laptop's internal hard drive and confirm the wipe operation.

Step 4: Reinstall the Operating System

  • After wiping, the hard drive will be blank and requires a fresh OS installation to function.

  • On a spare computer, use Microsoft's Media Creation Tool to create a Windows installation boot drive.

  • Insert the installation disc into the Lenovo laptop 

  • Follow the Windows Setup wizard. When prompted for a product key, click ‘I don't have a product key’.

  • If the laptop was factory-installed with Windows, the system will automatically read the built-in activation information and complete activation upon installation.

For a laptop intended for resale, employing this method is the only responsible course of action. Whilst it involves additional steps, it ensures you do not inadvertently disclose another individual's personal data. Lenovo's built-in recovery function, whilst convenient, offers insufficient security in such circumstances.
