How to upgrade Windows 10 Home to Pro without product key?
You can upgrade from Windows 10 Home to Pro without reinstalling Windows, but you still need a valid Pro license to activate it. A Windows 10 Home license cannot activate the Pro edition.
The simplest option does not require you to enter a product key:
- Back up your important files.
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
- Under Upgrade your edition of Windows, select Go to the Store.
- Purchase the Windows 10 Pro upgrade with your Microsoft account.
- Follow the prompts and restart the computer.
- Return to Activation and confirm that Windows 10 Pro is activated with a digital license.
Your files, installed applications and most settings should remain in place because this is an edition upgrade rather than a clean installation.
It is also possible to change the installed edition using Microsoft’s generic Pro setup key and activate later. However, that setup key only installs the Pro features; it does not provide a license or activate Windows. You would still need to purchase a genuine Pro license or use an existing Pro digital license afterward.
Until activation is completed, Windows may display an activation watermark and restrict some personalization settings. Switching back from Pro to Home is also not a simple edition change and may require reinstalling Windows, so I would not change editions until you are ready to obtain the Pro license.
One more consideration: standard support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. Upgrading from Home to Pro does not extend that support period, so check whether the computer is covered by Extended Security Updates or can run Windows 11 before purchasing the upgrade.
