How to repair corrupted files on Windows 10?

A crash can damage a file if the computer was saving it when the crash happened. Try these steps in order:

 1.Make a copy first

Copy the damaged files to another folder or USB drive. Try all repairs on the copies and keep the original files unchanged.

 2.Repair Word and Excel files

Open Word or Excel first, then go to File > Open > Browse. Select the damaged file, click the arrow next to Open, and choose Open and Repair.

For Excel, choose Repair first. If that does not work, repeat the steps and choose Extract Data.

 3.Look for an older copy

If the file is stored in OneDrive, open OneDrive in a browser, right-click the file and select Version history. Restore a version from before the laptop crashed.

For a file stored only on the computer, right-click it and select Properties > Previous Versions. This only works if Windows had already created a backup.

 4.Check for an unsaved Office copy

In Word or Excel, open File > Info > Manage Document/Workbook, then select Recover Unsaved Documents/Workbooks.

 5.For damaged photos

Try opening a copy of the photo with another app, such as Paint. If no app can open it, Windows usually cannot repair it. The safest option is to restore it from OneDrive, File History or another backup. Avoid uploading private photos to unknown repair websites.

Because several files were damaged after the crash, check whether the drive has a problem. Follow these steps:

1.Back up your important files first

Copy any documents, photos and other files that still open normally to a USB drive, external drive or OneDrive. Complete the backup before checking the drive.

2.Open Command Prompt as administrator

Right-click the Start button and select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin). If Windows asks whether you want to allow the app to make changes, click Yes.

3.Scan the system drive

Type the following command and press Enter:

chkdsk C: /scan

The scan may take several minutes. Leave the window open until it finishes.

4.Check the result

If no problems are found, continue using the computer and watch for any more damaged files.

If Windows reports file system errors, enter:

chkdsk C: /f

If it asks to schedule the check for the next restart, type Y, press Enter and restart the computer. Windows will check and repair the drive while the computer starts.

5.If the problem comes back

If more files become damaged, the computer keeps crashing, or the drive repeatedly reports errors, the drive may be failing. Stop saving important files to it. Run the hardware test provided by the computer manufacturer or ask a repair technician to check the drive.
