How to open and extract rar files on Windows 10 pc?
Why Windows 10 still does not add support for .rar file? I recently downloaded a few RAR files on my Windows 10 PC (the latest 22H2), but there is no way to open the winrar archives. It seems like Windows doesn't have native support for RAR archives like it does for ZIP files. I tried double-clicking the file, but it just asked me to choose an app from the Store.
Can someone suggest a reliable and safe way to extract rar files on windows 10 without causing any issues to my system. And are there any built-in options in Windows 10 that I might be missing?
Thanks

You’re right—Windows 10 has native support for ZIP but not for RAR, so you’ll need a third-party tool. The most popular free and safe options are 7-Zip and PeaZip, both lightweight and open-source. After installing, you can just right-click a RAR file and choose Extract Here or Extract to Folder.
If you prefer an all-in-one solution, WinRAR (the original RAR tool) works too, though it’s shareware with a trial period. There aren’t any hidden built-in options for RAR in Windows 10, so a third-party extractor is the way to go. For safety, always download these tools directly from their official sites.

Windows 10 by default doesn’t support RAR files, so when you try to open one, nothing happens. To extract them, you need a third-party application. The easiest option is to use a dedicated archive tool. One choice is the https://www.gbig.org/org_profiles/41400/products/367, which not only opens RAR files but can also convert them into ZIP, 7z, TAR and other formats if you want. It works with just a few clicks and keeps your files safe without altering details. The software runs on almost every Windows edition, including Windows 10, and a free demo is available for testing.

Opening RAR files on Windows 10 can pose certain security risks, especially if the RAR files come from untrusted or unknown sources. RAR files can contain malicious files such as executables (.exe), scripts, or other harmful payloads. When extracted, these malicious files can infect your system if you run or open them.
RAR archives can hide malicious scripts or files that can exploit vulnerabilities when extracted or opened. Some malware is designed to activate upon extraction or when specific files are opened. If the extraction software has security flaws, malicious RAR files could potentially exploit these vulnerabilities to execute harmful code on your system. RAR files may be used in phishing attacks, tricking you into opening them with enticing filenames or descriptions, leading to malware infection.
How to to Reduce Risks?
1. Only open RAR files on WIndows 10 from trusted sources.
2. Scan RAR files with antivirus software before extracting.
3. Avoid opening RAR files that seem suspicious or have unusual filenames.
4. Extract RAR files in a sandbox or isolated environment if possible.
5. Keep your Windows and security software up to date.

Any online method is not the best option. I even reject them. Opening RAR files in Windows 10 using online services like Extract,me or similar tools has some disadvantages, including:
- Uploading your files to online services can expose sensitive or confidential data to potential security threats or data breaches.
- Your files are stored on third-party servers during the extraction process, which may raise privacy issues, especially if the files contain personal or sensitive information.
- Many online extraction tools impose size limits on uploaded files, so large RAR archives may not be supported or could require a paid plan.
- You need a stable and fast internet connection for uploading and downloading files, which could be inconvenient or slow for large files.
- Online tools typically only extract files but do not offer advanced features like password recovery, file repair, or managing archives directly.
- Some RAR files may be encrypted or corrupted, and online tools might not handle these cases effectively compared to dedicated desktop software.
To open RAR files in Windows 10. Using dedicated desktop software like 7-Zip can mitigate many of these issues, offering more control, better security, and faster processing locally on your Windows 10 system.

While 7-Zip is a versatile and free tool for handling various archive formats, it may not be the best choice for extracting RAR files on Windows 10. The primary issue is that 7-Zip's support for RAR files is limited, as it relies on reverse-engineered code rather than the official RAR algorithms. This can lead to compatibility problems, especially with newer RAR versions or files using advanced compression features. In some cases, 7-Zip may fail to extract files correctly or even corrupt the data, particularly if the archive is password-protected or uses multi-volume splitting.
For extracting RAR files from Windows 10, it’s better to use the official FossZip software, which fully support the RAR format. These programs are regularly updated to handle the latest RAR specifications, ensuring smoother and more secure extraction. Additionally, FossZip offers better error recovery and repair features, which can be crucial if the archive is damaged. While 7-Zip is excellent for other formats like ZIP or 7z, its limitations with RAR files make it a less optimal choice for this specific task.

Why Windows 10 Doesn't Support RAR Natively?
Microsoft's Windows 10 is built to natively support ZIP files because ZIP is an open, widely-used format integrated into Windows File Explorer. RAR is a proprietary format developed by WinRAR, which requires specific algorithms that Windows does not include by default, hence the need for third-party tools.
