Apple includes several settings that most users don't know about. These are completely free and safe for you get more storage on MacBook Pro.
- Optimize Storage: Go to Apple Menu > System Settings > General > Storage. Click the "i" icons next to categories. Turn on "Empty Trash Automatically" (after 30 days) and "Optimize Streaming" (removes watched movies).
- Reduce Clutter (System Data): A huge portion of "System Data" is often just old iOS backups and large DMG files.
- iOS Backups: Go to Finder > your phone name > Manage Backups. Delete old backups of phones you don't use anymore.
- DMG Files: Open your Downloads folder. Search for .dmg and delete the installer files. You don't need them after the app is installed.
The only way to truly add physical storage to a modern MacBook Pro without paying for iCloud is to use an external drive. To get more storage on MacBook Pro, you can move your Photos Library or big project folders to a cheap USB-C flash drive or SSD and access them anytime.
