How to find large files on mac to delete?
Use finder search by file size.
Finder is one of the safest built-in ways to find large files on Mac because it lets you search your own folders and review each file before deleting it. It is especially useful for finding old videos, downloaded installers, ZIP files, disk images, screen recordings, and large documents that may be taking up storage without you noticing.
How to find large files on macOS to delete
Step 1: Open Finder from the Dock. Press Command + F to open Finder Search. At the top, choose This Mac if you want to search the whole Mac.
Step 2: Choose the current folder instead if you only want to search places like Downloads, Documents, or Movies.
Step 3: Click the first search filter dropdown and choose Other. In the search box, type File Size. Select File Size, then click OK. Set the rule to something like:
File Size > is greater than > 500 MB
Step 4: To make the results easier to check, switch Finder to List View.
Step 5: Click the Size column to sort the results from largest to smallest.
Step 6: Delete the large files on Mac to the Trash. Empty the Trash only after you are sure you do not need them.
Extra Tips
You can search specific folders first, such as Downloads or Movies, because they often contain the largest personal files. This is safer than searching the whole Mac and deleting files from unfamiliar locations.
Avoid deleting files from System, Library, or app-related folders if you do not know what they do. Removing the wrong support file may cause an app or macOS feature to stop working properly.
