How to convert PDF to Excel without losing formatting?
Adding to the good suggestions above: I built a free Chrome extension for exactly this, called SnipSheet. You drag a box around a table in the PDF and get an Excel file with the rows and columns aligned, and the numbers come out as real values you can sort and calculate with.
It also handles the things that often go wrong in conversions: negative numbers in parentheses, European number formats (1.234,56), dates and repeated headers on long tables. Cells it's unsure about are highlighted so you know what to double-check. It works on scanned PDFs too.

To use it with a PDF on your computer, right-click the PDF, choose Open with > Google Chrome, then click the SnipSheet icon and drag a box around the table. If the table is longer than your screen, click "Add more rows", scroll down and select the next part.
The selected area is read by an AI service and isn't stored. The free plan covers 20 tables a month. Whichever tool you end up using, a quick check of one column total against the PDF is a good habit. Happy to hear feedback if you try it!
