How to change or convert avif to webp for web publishing?

Hi everyone,

I'm working on optimizing images for web publishing and recently came across the AVIF image format. While AVIF offers great compression and quality, it's not yet supported universally by all browsers or tools. For broader compatibility, I need to change AVIF files to WebP format, which is widely supported and still efficient for web use.

I'm currently on a Windows 10 PC and looking for reliable methods to convert avif to webp without losing quality. What tools or steps do you recommend for this kind of task on Windows 10?

Thanks in advance for your help!

  • Using online converters AVIF to WebP on a Windows computer can seem super convenient, but there are some reasons why people might be cautious or prefer other methods:

    • When you upload your images to a website, you're trusting that site with your data. If the images are sensitive, private, or proprietary, this can be risky. There's always a small chance of data misuse or leaks.
    • Large images can take time to upload, especially if your internet isn't blazing fast. Also, some sites have file size limits, so big images might not work.
    • Sometimes, online tools compress or change images slightly, which might lead to quality loss or unexpected results. You might not have full control over compression settings or output quality.
    • Many free online converters only handle a few images at a time. If you have a lot of images to convert, it can get tedious.
    • Some free online tools may display ads or, in worst cases, contain malware or intrusive scripts, especially if the site isn’t reputable.

When online AVIF to WebP converters are OK:

    • If you're just converting a couple of non-sensitive images quickly.
    • If you don't want to install software.
    • If privacy isn't a big concern for your images.

From what I’ve gathered (and having played around with image conversions myself), convert AVIF to WebP isn’t usually dangerous — as long as you stick to reputable tools and don’t do anything crazy. Basically, it’s a straightforward format conversion, so no risk of malware or anything like that.

That said, a few things to keep in mind:

    * Quality Loss: If you’re converting from a lossy format like AVIF, you might lose some quality or details, especially if you tweak compression settings. Keep an eye on the output to make sure it looks good.
    * Original Files: Always keep a backup of your original AVIF images, just in case something goes sideways or you want to go back.
    * Metadata & Transparency: Some formats handle metadata or transparency differently. Usually, WebP supports transparency, but check if you need that feature.
    * Batch Processing: If you’re doing a lot at once, double-check a few samples first to make sure everything looks right before converting everything.

In my experience, just use trusted tools like 1megeMegick or XnC0nvert to convert AVIF to WebP, and you’ll be good to go. No hidden dangers — just be cautious with the quality settings and backups, and you’re fine.
