You can right-click a program's .exe file, go to Properties > Compatibility, and check the box to "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" . You can then select an older version of Windows (like Windows 7 or even Windows 98) that the program was designed for . This manually tells the system to apply the relevant compatibility fixes.
