How does my laptop know when I’m playing a game?
Windows detects when you're playing a game by identifying full-screen or DirectX applications and then activating Game Mode, which is supposed to prioritize your game's processes. However, on my lower-spec laptop, this detection fails to reduce background tasks like Windows Update, so I still get low frame rates and stuttering during gameplay.

Windows doesn't rely on a single signal to decide "you're gaming." It combines foreground window state, fullscreen status, DirectX calls, and process characteristics to make an inference.
Game Mode only prioritizes your game—it doesn't stop background tasks like Windows Update, so you'll need to pause updates and disable startup apps manually for real performance gains.
Updates will resume automatically after this period ends.
