How can I upgrade Windows 8 to Windows 10 for free?

Hi all,

I have a Dell Latitude 3550 Laptop running Windows 8.1 Professional. Unfortunately, some of my favorites app don't support Windows 8.1 anymore. So it is time for an upgrade now. How can I upgrade my Windows 8 to Windows 10 for free?

After upgrading Windows 8 to Windows 10, some older hardware might need new drivers. Check Windows Update first, then visit your PC manufacturer's website for the latest Windows 10 drivers for your model.

Microsoft offered a free upgrade Windows 8 to Windows 10 during the initial rollout period (from July 2015 to July 2016). However, that free upgrade offer officially ended, and Microsoft no longer provides a dedicated free upgrade path for Windows 8 users.

However, historically, some users have used the following approaches:

    1. Using the Windows 10 Media Creatiion Tool with a Windows 8/8.1 Key:
If your Windows 8/8.1 installation was previously activated with a genuine license, the upgrade process may still recognize your key and allow activation after upgrading Windows 8 to Windows 10.
You can download the Windows 10 Media Creatiion Tool, run it, and select "Upgrade this PC now."
During the process, it may automatically detect a valid Windows 8.1 key and activate Windows 10.

    2. Registry or Activation Hacks:
Some online communities share registry tweaks or hacks claiming to enable free upgrades.
These methods are not reliable and may violate Microsoft's terms. They can also be risky, leading to system instability or security issues.

You can upgrade to Windows 10 from Windows 8.1 with a bootable USB or DVD.

This method is identical to the one above but gives you an installation USB drive as a backup.

    1. When running the Media Creation Tool, choose "Create installation media for another PC".

    2. Select your language, edition (Windows 10 Home vs. Pro - choose the one that matches your Windows 8 edition), and architecture (64-bit is recommended for most modern PCs).

    3. Choose "USB flash drive" (you'll need a blank USB drive with at least 8GB of space) or "ISO file" (to burn a DVD later).

    4. Once the USB drive is created, plug it into your PC.

    5. Open File Explorer, navigate to the USB drive, and double-click on setup.exe.

    6. This will launch the same upgrade process as in Method 1. Choose to "Keep personal files and apps" when prompted.

Now, Windows 8 can be upgraded to Windows 10 and it is free in 2025!

Upgrading Windows 8 to Windows 10 for free can be a smooth process, but there are several common errors you should avoid to ensure a successful upgrade.

    1. Check whether your PC meets the minimum requirements for Windows 10. Incompatible hardware can cause upgrade failures or performance issues.
    2. Make sure your Windows 8 system is fully updated before upgrading Windows 8 to Windows 10. Install all pending updates to ensure compatibility and security.
    3. Remove external devices like printers, external drives, or USB hubs that aren’t needed during the upgrade to prevent conflicts.
    4. Verify that essential applications will work on Windows 10. Some older software may not be compatible and might require updates.
    5. Have a recovery plan in place, such as creating a system image or recovery drive, so you can revert if the upgrade causes issues.
    6. Schedule the upgrade when you have sufficient time and internet stability, as it can take some time depending on your system.
    7. Pay attention to what the upgrade process advises or warns about, especially regarding data and software compatibility.

Windows 8 is too old for most of the modern apps. Before upgrading Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 for free, make sure you have a backup of the important data. This is the most critical step. Before any major system upgrade, always back up your important files to an external hard drive or cloud service. While the upgrade process is designed to preserve your data, things can go wrong.

Check System Requirements: Ensure your computer can run Windows 10. The requirements are very similar to Windows 8:

    • Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster.
    • RAM: 1 gigabyte (GB) for 32-bit or 2 GB for 64-bit.
    • Hard disk space: 16 GB for 32-bit OS or 20 GB for 64-bit OS.
    • Graphics card: DirectX 9 or later with a WDDM 1.0 driver.
    • Display: 800x600 resolution.
    • Update Windows 8: Make sure your current Windows 8 installation is fully updated. Run Windows Update and install all available important and optional updates. This resolves potential driver and software conflicts.

Find Your Product Key: It's a good idea to find your Windows 8 product key and have it handy, just in case. You can use a free tool to find it stored in your current registry.
