How can I disable or turn off startup programs in windows 10?

My Windows 10 PC is taking a long time to reach the desktop because too many programs are launching at startup.

I know how to find the Startuptab in Task Manager, but I'm worried about accidentally disabling something important for the system.

  • Are there any specific system processes I should never touch?
  • Aside from Task Manager, are there other hidden folders where apps hide?
  • Is there a tool you recommend for a beginner to safely manage boot performance?

How can I turn off or disable startup program in windows 10 easily and safely?

Thanks for any input!

Should I Remove It? is is a great tool to safely disable windows 10 startup programs by helping you decide which startup items are safe to turn off. It essentially lets you check community ratings and expert recommendations for any program, allowing you to confidently disable unnecessary startup items without risking system stability.

Open Task Manager, switch to the Startup tab, and note the names of the programs you want to check. Search for those programs on the official website to review community ratings and recommendations, so you can determine whether it’s safe to disable them. This will help you make an informed decision quickly, effectively addressing your need to disable windows 10 startup programs while ensuring your system runs smoothly.

It is particularly useful for beginners who are unsure which startup programs are safe to disable, optimizing system boot speed by removing unnecessary auto-start items, or troubleshooting slow startup issues on Windows 10 devices.

Autoruns is a powerful tool that allows you to completely disable Windows 10 startup programs that Task Manager cannot detect.

Step 1: Download and run the software

Step 2: Go to Options → Hide Microsoft Entries to hide system security items

Step 3: Go to Options → Hide Windows Entries for more secure management

Step 4: At this point, only third-party programs will be displayed

Finally, uncheck any items you do not want to run at startup

    Tab Descriptions:

    • Login: Programs displayed in Task Manager and hidden registry entries
    • Services: Services that start automatically in the background
    • Scheduled Tasks: Hidden startup tasks
    • File Explorer: Shell extensions

With full visibility of all startup items, it is the most thorough way to disable windows 10 startup programs and optimize boot speed.

Some programs automatically start by hiding in Task Scheduler, and you can use this method to disable windows 10 startup programs that don’t show in Task Manager.

How to disable windows 10 startup programs

    1. Press Win + R, type taskschd.msc, and then press Enter

    2. Expand the Task Scheduler Library

    3. Check common paths, such as Microsoft\Windows\Application Experience, Microsoft\Office, and Microsoft\Windows\Customer Experience Improvement Program

    4. Right-click any non-Microsoft task you recognize, and then select Disable

It helps you manage hidden startup items in depth, offering another effective way to disable Windows 10 startup programs and speed up system boot times.

Note: For beginners, it’s safer to use Task Manager instead, as Task Scheduler is more advanced and risky if misused.

MSConfig is a built-in troubleshooting tool in Windows that has been around since the Windows 98 days. It is essentially a "control center" that allows you to change how your computer boots up and which services run in the background.

Here is another simple way to disable windows 10 start applications with the built-in tool msconfig.

MSConfig is a built-in troubleshooting tool in Windows that has been around since the Windows 98 days. It is essentially a "control center" that allows you to change how your computer boots up and which services run in the background.

    1. Press Windows + R, type msconfig, and press Enter
    2. Go to the Services tab
    3. Check Hide all Microsoft services (very important to avoid breaking the system)
    4. Review the remaining third-party services
    5. Uncheck the services you don’t need at startup
    6. Click Apply → OK
    7. Restart your computer to apply changes

MSConfig is a powerful method for disabling startup programs in windows 10 that aren't visible in Task Manager. When used carefully, especially by hiding Microsoft services. It helps improve boot speed and resolve conflicts, making it a great option for advanced users or troubleshooting scenarios.

Disabling startup programs improves boot time because fewer applications are competing for system resources when Windows starts. Each startup app uses CPU, memory, and disk access, so reducing the number of programs allows the system to focus on loading essential services faster.

Another reason is that many startup programs run background processes and services simultaneously. This creates a bottleneck during login, especially on older PCs or systems with slower hard drives. By disabling unnecessary apps, you reduce this congestion and allow Windows to reach the desktop more quickly.

Finally, fewer startup programs mean fewer delays after logging in. Even if the desktop appears, hidden apps may still be loading in the background, slowing everything down. Disabling them leads to a smoother, more responsive experience right from the moment the system boots up.

Task Manager is the most reliable built-in tool in Windows 10 for managing startup programs. It not only lets you disable apps easily, but also shows how much each program affects boot time. This makes it ideal for quickly speeding up a slow PC without installing extra software.

How to turn off windows 10 startup program

    1. Right-click the taskbar and select Task Manager.

    2. Click “More details” at the bottom if you see a simple window.

    3. Click the Startup tab at the top.

    4. Look at the Startup impact column.

    5. Right-click the program.

    6. Click Disable and the status will change to Disabled.

    7. Changes take effect after reboot

P.S. Apps like game launchers, cloud sync tools, or heavy software often slow startup the most.

Using Task Manager is the fastest and safest way to disable startup applications in Windows 10. With just a few clicks, you can identify high-impact apps, disable them, and significantly improve boot speed AND no technical skills required.
