How can I compress MOV video files over 1gb to small size on PC or Mac?

Some of the .mov videos are screen recording by Quicktime player on my Mac and the rest are movies saved on my Windows 10 PC. Now, the free space on my laptop is very less and I need to compress the mov videos large than 1GB to a small size.

How can compress mov file over 1GB so I can reduce the video size to a much smaller one without losing much quality?

P.S. I also want to shrink a .MOV file to email sometimes.

VideoOptimizer supports MOV (.mov) files and offers two compression modes that are particularly useful for files over 1GB:

    • Target Size Mode — Reduces your file to a target percentage of the original (10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, or 50% presets available). This mode performs 2-pass encoding for better bitrate control, making it ideal when you need to compress MOV file over 1GB to a specific size.
    • Quality Priority Mode — Uses CRF (Constant Rate Factor) to maintain consistent visual quality while reducing file size.

You can also choose between H.264 (libx264) and H.265 (libx265) codecs, with H.265 offering better compression efficiency for large files.

A MOV file larger than 2GB can be difficult to upload, transfer, or store, so how to compress mov over 2GB mainly comes down to choosing an efficient video encoder and balancing quality against the target file size. VidCoder is , open-source Windows transcoder that provides a graphical interface for configuring video and audio encoding.

    Set the Target:

    • Import the MOV file and first check its duration, resolution, and current file size. Decide whether your priority is simply getting below 2GB or making the file considerably smaller, because this affects which encoding method you should use.

    Configure the Video:

    • Open the encoding settings and select an H.265/HEVC encoder for better compression efficiency. For quality-based encoding, choose a reasonable constant-quality setting and make a short test encode first. A value around RF 20 can be a starting point, but the appropriate value depends on the source and does not guarantee a specific output size.

    Reduce the Audio Size:

    • Check the audio settings and use a compressed format such as AAC when appropriate. A bitrate around 128 kbps can reduce audio size for ordinary stereo content, although higher-quality or multichannel audio may require different settings.

    Encode and Compare:

    • Choose the destination file, start the encode, and wait for processing to finish. Compare the resulting file size and visual quality with the original. If the output still exceeds 2GB, adjust the video bitrate or quality setting and encode again.

The important distinction when considering how to compress mov over 2GB is that constant-quality encoding controls visual quality rather than guaranteeing an exact file size. If staying below a strict 2GB limit is essential, target-bitrate or size-based calculations are more appropriate.

When figuring out how to compress mov over 2GB, reducing the video bitrate or switching to a more efficient codec can significantly decrease the file size while keeping the original resolution. Shutter Encoder provides a graphical interface for adjusting these encoding settings and supports batch processing when several large videos need to be handled.

How to compress move over 2GB

    1. Add MOV files: Open the program and drag and drop the MOV video into the file list. If you want to process multiple files using similar settings, you can add multiple files.

    2. Select a codec: Open the selection menu. For broad compatibility, choose H.264; if you want more efficient compression and your playback device supports it, choose H.265.

    3. Open the bitrate settings: Locate the bitrate control option in the encoding settings. Reducing the video bitrate is one of the primary ways to reduce the output file size.

    4. Set the target bitrate: Enter a lower bitrate value based on the resolution, frame rate, source video quality, and desired output size. Never assume that a single fixed bitrate applies to all 1080p videos.

If necessary, to preserve the original resolution and dimensions, leave the scaling settings unchanged. If file size is more important than resolution, lowering the output resolution can further improve compression.

    5. Check the audio settings: Audio also affects the final file size. Use an appropriate audio codec and bitrate, rather than keeping unnecessarily high audio settings.

    6. Select the output location: Confirm where the compressed file will be saved to avoid accidentally overwriting the original MOV file.

    7. Start encoding: Click the Start button and wait for the conversion to complete. Depending on the codec, duration, resolution, and your computer’s hardware, processing large files may take a considerable amount of time.

    8. Test Results: Compare the size of the new file with that of the original file, and play several clips of the video to check the image quality, motion effects, audio synchronization, and compatibility.

When compressing MOV files larger than 2 GB, there is no fixed bitrate that guarantees the final file size will be a specific value. Video duration and audio bitrate also affect the final result, so you may need to further adjust the bitrate or perform another round of encoding.

    P.S.

    • Keep the original MOV file until you’ve thoroughly checked the compressed version.
    • H.265 generally offers higher compression efficiency than H.264, but not all older devices and applications support it equally well.
    • A bitrate that’s too low can result in blocky images, loss of fine details, and visible artifacts, especially in videos with a lot of motion.

Large MOV files, especially QuickTime screen recordings or videos larger than 1 GB, can quickly consume storage space and are usually too large to attach to an email. For How to shrink a .MOV file to email, FastFlix can re-encode the video with a more efficient codec and lower bitrate while letting you control the balance between file size and visual quality.

How to shrink a .MOV file to email while keeping reasonable video quality

    1. Download the program from its official GitHub releases page, install it, and open it on your PC or Mac.
    2. Click Select Video and open the large MOV file. Check the source resolution, frame rate, and duration before changing the encoding settings.
    3. Select H.264 for broad compatibility, or H.265/HEVC when a smaller file is more important and the receiving device supports it.
    4. Choose a quality-based encoding mode and increase compression gradually rather than immediately using very aggressive settings. For screen recordings, reducing an unnecessarily high frame rate can also reduce the output size.
    5. Set the output container to MP4 when you need a widely supported file for sharing. Choose a different output folder so the original MOV file is not overwritten.
    6. Start encoding and check the resulting file size and playback quality. When preparing a video for email, compare the final size with your email provider's attachment limit and compress it again if necessary.

    Notes:

    • Keep the original MOV file until you check the result.
    • H.265 usually compresses more efficiently but has less universal compatibility than H.264.
    • Very large videos may still be too large for email even after compression.

Large MOV recordings can take up a lot of storage space, especially when they contain long screen recordings or high-resolution video. If you're looking into How to shrink a .MOV file to email, LosslessCut can reduce the amount of video you need to keep by cutting unwanted sections without re-encoding the entire file. You can remove unnecessary beginnings, endings, or other segments and export the remaining footage while preserving the original video and audio quality.

For How to shrink a .MOV file to email, the most useful functions are lossless trimming, cutting, and segment removal. Because these operations generally avoid re-encoding, they can make a MOV file smaller when unwanted footage is removed, but they do not significantly compress an unchanged full-length video. This distinction is important for files over 1 GB: the final size reduction depends mainly on how much footage you remove rather than on lowering the video bitrate or resolution.

    Pros:

    • Cuts MOV files without unnecessary quality loss
    • Removes unwanted sections without full re-encoding

    Cons:

    • Does not substantially compress an unchanged video
    • File-size reduction depends on how much footage is removed
