On a Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC, you can extract an image from a PDF for free with PDFgear, capture it with Snipping Tool, or use Adobe Acrobat Pro for batch extraction. To extract an image without unnecessary quality loss, save the embedded image instead of taking a screenshot.

There are three different operations that are often described as “extracting an image”:

Extract a PDF image without Adobe Acrobat

If the picture is a selectable object, PDFgear can save it directly.

4. Choose the Save option.

Adobe Acrobat Pro is a paid option that can export multiple embedded images from a PDF.

1. Open the PDF in Adobe Acrobat Pro.
2. Go to the Convert tab and select the Image format.
3. Select JPEG, PNG, or TIFF as the output format.
4. Turn on Export all images.
5. Select the output folder and click Convert.

Make sure Export all images is enabled. Otherwise, Acrobat may convert each complete PDF page into an image instead of extracting the individual pictures. This workflow applies to embedded raster images; vector graphics are not necessarily exported as JPEG or PNG files.

Extract a picture with Windows Snipping Tool

For one quick image, Windows has a built-in option:

1. Open the PDF in Microsoft Edge or another reader.
2. Enlarge the page until the picture looks sharp.
3. Press Windows + Shift + S.
4. Select Capture area.
5. Drag around the required image.
6. Copy or Save the screenshot.

Snipping Tool is convenient, but it cannot preserve the original image resolution. Increasing the zoom may improve the capture, although it still remains a screenshot.

Online PDF image extractors are another option, but check how the service handles uploaded files before using one for contracts, financial records, IDs, or other confidential documents.

For maximum available quality, use direct embedded-image extraction. Use PNG for text, logos, diagrams, and line art; use JPEG for photographs or when you need a smaller file.
