Can't figure out a way for exporting text messages from iphone to pdf
Hi everyone, I need some help exporting my iPhone text messages to PDF on a Windows PC. I have a few important text conversations that I want to save, print, and keep as a backup. I tried checking iTunes and the Photos app, but I could not find a simple option to export text messages from iPhone directly as PDF.
I prefer a method that can keep the message dates, contact names, and full conversation order. It would also be great if attachments like photos or screenshots can be saved together.

Take screenshot or email the text conversion.

You manually copy the text from your Messages conversation, paste it into a document (Apple Notes or Apple Pages), and then use that app's built-in PDF export feature to create the final PDF file. Both Notes and Pages are free, pre-installed apps on your iPhone.
This approach uses the Notes app as an intermediate destination before you export text messages from iPhone to PDF.
Step 1: Copy the Messages
- Open the Messages app and navigate to the conversation you want to export text messages from iPhone to PDF.
- Tap and hold on a message bubble, then drag the selection handles to highlight the entire conversation or the portion you want to save.
- Tap "Copy" from the popup menu. For long conversations, you will need to scroll and repeat this process in chunks—there is no "Select All" feature for text messages.
Step 2: Paste into Notes
- Open the Notes app. Create a new note by tapping the compose button. Tap and hold in the note body, then select "Paste" to insert the copied messages.
Step 3: Convert the Note to PDF
According to search results, Apple Notes has a built-in PDF export feature . Here's how to use it:
- Tap the Share button at the top of the note
- Scroll down and select "Send a Copy" or "Print"
- If you select "Print," use the pinch-out gesture on the print preview to expand it into a full PDF view
- Tap the Share button again and select "Save to Files" to save the PDF to your iPhone

bagoup can help you export text messages from iPhone to PDF, but it requires some technical know-how and a Mac computer. Here's a complete walkthrough of how it works and what you'll need.
Step-by-Step Guide to Export Text messages from iPhone to PDF
Step 1: Install bagoup
- Open the Terminal app on your Mac.
- If you don't have Homebrew, paste the installation command from brew.sh into the terminal.
- Once Homebrew is ready, type: brew install bagoup and press Enter.
Step 2: Run the Export
Once installed, you can export your conversations to a .txt or .csv file.
- -In the Terminal, type: bagoup
- To save a specific conversation, you will need to find the contact's ID or name. A common command structure is:
- bagoup -f ~/Desktop/my_messages.txt
Step 3: Convert the Text File to PDF
Bagoup does not create a .pdf file directly . It extracts the data into a plain text file. Once you have your .txt file on your Desktop:
- Open the .txt file in any text editor.
- Go to File > Print.
- Click the PDF dropdown button in the print dialog and select Save as PDF.

If you have access to a Mac, this is the best free method because it preserves the formatting and is much faster. It requires you to be signed into the same Apple ID on both devices.
Here are the steps to export text messages from iPhone to PDF:
Step 1: Sync your messages. On your iPhone, go to Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > Show All > Messages and turn on "Sync this iPhone". On your Mac, open the "Messages" app, go to "Messages" settings > iMessage, and then check "Enable Messages in iCloud".
Step 2: Start a conversation. On your Mac, open the "Messages" app and click on the conversation you want to save.
Step 3: Print as PDF format. In the top menu bar, click "File" > "Print". In the resulting print dialog box, click the "PDF" button at the bottom left and select "Save as PDF".
Some notes:
To export text messages from iPhone to PDF, this method is only applicable to regular iMessage and SMS messages that are synchronized through iCloud. If your conversation records are very long, the "Messages" app on your Mac may sometimes become slow or unresponsive.

DB Browser for SQLite is a free desktop tool to export text messages from iphone to pdf on pc by reading raw iPhone SMS backup files.
This method needs basic technical skills and starts with making a full iTunes or Finder iPhone backup on your computer.

Step 1: Find and copy the SMS database fileOpen your computer’s iPhone backup folder, look inside the random-named backup folders, and locate the file named 3d0d7e5fb2ce288813306e4d4636395e047a3d28. Copy this file to your desktop for safe use.
Step 2: Open the file in the softwareLaunch DB Browser for SQLite, open the copied file, then go to the Browse Data tab and choose the message table. Step 4: Turn CSV into PDFOpen the CSV file in Excel, tidy up the layout and clear messy content, then save it as a PDF via the print option.

Email Conversation is a built-in iPhone method to export text messages from iphone to pdf without extra apps.
It lets you save selected messages via email and then convert them to PDF, but it only works with one batch of messages at a time, not entire long conversations.
First, open the Messages conversation you want to export. Press and hold a message, then tap "More...". Select all the messages you want to save. Tap the Share icon, then choose Mail. Send the selected messages to your own email address.
On your PC, open the email containing the messages. Use the print function and select "Save as PDF" to complete the process.
Once saved, you’ll have a PDF file with the selected messages stored permanently.
Cons
- You cannot export an entire long conversation history in a single batch. You must manually select and send messages in batches, which is very tedious for large chat histories.
- The exported content will lose key details such as precise timestamps, sender names, and conversation thread formatting, reducing the usefulness of the generated PDF file for official or legal records.
- Attachments such as photos, videos, or voice messages are not included in the email export, so the final PDF file contains only plain text.
This method is a simple way to export text messages from iphone to pdf using only native iPhone and email features, but it requires manual selection and is not practical for very long conversations, so you should plan carefully before using it.
If you don’t want to use third-party tools, this is a reliable built-in option.
