Can I use an x8 PCIe Fibre card in an x1 slot? Or am I better off using an old windows 10 machine?
Basically the title. With the rising hard drive prices I'm strongly considering finally pulling the trigger on an LTO6 drive, which I've wanted for years.
However, my daily driver only has 1 available PCIe slot and it's x1. The only other PCIe slot on the motherboard is x16 and has a GPU installed. The card that the drive takes is x8. Can I do it? Or am I better off to use an old windows 10 computer i have for digitizing?
Thank you.
I'm a bit nervous to spend a grand on something I know so little about how to use. I'm sure I can learn but I want to ensure the hardware is compatible before buying.

If your drive or card requires x8 bandwidth for proper operation, running in an x1 slot may cause performance issues or even failure.
If the drive or card is "self-powered" and designed to work at lower bandwidths or does not require full x8 bandwidth for operation, it might work but with potential performance limitations.
