Yes, a USB-C dock can reduce SSD speeds. USB-C describes the connector, not its speed: the dock’s upstream connection and the specific port used by the SSD both matter. Even a Thunderbolt dock can have USB ports limited to 5 or 10 Gbps.
To check whether the dock is the bottleneck:
- Connect the SSD directly to the laptop and test it with CrystalDiskMark.
- Connect it through the dock and repeat with the same test settings.
- Disconnect other devices from the dock and test again.
If it is slower through the dock even with nothing else connected, check the dock’s port specifications and upstream cable. If performance improves when other devices are disconnected, shared bandwidth is likely contributing.
For reference, a 5 Gbps USB connection often tops out around 400–450 MB/s, while 10 Gbps commonly delivers around 800–1,000 MB/s with a sufficiently fast SSD.
