Are the small dots appearing in the Windows 10 Task Manager sidebar a bug or a settings issue?
When I open Task Manager, I notice some mysterious small dots in the sidebar. I’m not sure if this is a system display bug, a visual indicator for an enabled feature, or a setting that needs to be adjusted. I’d like to know if other users have encountered the same issue and how to remove them or restore the normal display.

Ensure your system is updated to the latest version, as updates often fix bugs.
Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and click Check for updates.

This is a normal feature of the Windows 10 Task Manager, indicating that background processes are running. If it affects your display, try restarting the Task Manager or checking for updates to your graphics card drivers.

It is completely understandable why those dots feel like a glitch. Usually, when we see unexpected artifacts on a screen, our first thought is "GPU driver error" or "corrupt file". However, in this specific case, it’s actually a design feature rather than a bug or a hardware failure.
Those small dots (often appearing as three vertical dots or a "hamburger" style icon) are part of the Navigation Pane toggle. They appear when the Task Manager window is resized to be narrow.
- The Indicator: When the sidebar is collapsed to show only icons (without text labels), Windows uses those dots as a handle or a visual cue that the menu can be expanded.
The Bug Illusion: Sometimes, due to specific display scaling (DPI) settings or window snapping, the sidebar ends up in a middle ground where the dots appear slightly off-center or clipped, making them look like dead pixels or a rendering error.
Since this is a UI behavior, you can usually resolve it by adjusting the window layout:
- Expand the Sidebar: Hover your mouse over the right edge of the sidebar (where the icons meet the data) until your cursor turns into a double-headed arrow. Click and drag to the right to reveal the full text labels (Processes, Performance, etc.).
Toggle the Menu: Click the three horizontal lines at the top left of the Task Manager window. This will force the sidebar to expand or collapse cleanly.
Check Display Scaling: If the dots look blurry or misplaced, right-click your desktop > Display settings > Scale and layout. Ensure you are using the "Recommended" percentage. Sometimes non-standard scaling causes the Task Manager's thin lines and dots to render poorly.
While it is "by design," many users consider it a UI bug in spirit because the dots don't always scale well on high-resolution monitors, leading to the mysterious look you described. If you expand the window or the sidebar, they should integrate back into the standard menu structure.
