What to do when people dont have a phone
- Feb 07, 2024
Makishi, both of these are very valid questions.
Currently, Universal Print supports 2 methods of secure release: PIN and QR code with the phone app.
We are planning additional secure release methods like releasing the job by swiping a badge on the printer. Please upvote this feature request if this is important to your organization, and please comment with any additional details that are specific to your organization. This would be an alternative to the phone. Also, if you have other suggestions, please create a new feature request at
Delegated secure release (i.e., someone sends a print job and someone else releases it at the printer) is also not yet available. Please upvote the feature request.

Hi Rani_Abdellatif ,
can i ask how to set up secure release via PIN? now i tested HP printer and in JOB RELEASE OPTION i have only two choice: direct print and qr code.
And i have similar problem with phone because in our company we dont have company phones and no all of suers will be able to use their own phone so i also lookin for some alternatives.
Thanks

The PIN release support in Universal Print is limited to select Universal Print ready printers. While, this list is not a full list of Universal Print ready printers, it may have your printer(s) listed to see if the printer vendor claims whether or not the particular printer model supports PIN through Universal Print.
To use PIN release, the printer is set as "Direct Print" since the print job is held at the printer itself and not within the Universal Print cloud service. Additionally, Universal Print currently does not provide a way for Admins to enforce that end-users must enter a PIN. This means that if the end-user does not enter a PIN, Universal Print will not reject the print job and the depending on the logic of the physical printer, the document may be processed right away or may be rejected depending on the physical printer's internal configuration.
Please note that the printer may support PIN release using OEM printer driver, but that's different from the PIN release through Universal Print.
- Peda05Oct 10, 2024Copper ContributorHi,
thanks for answer thats what i am afraid of...
So only way is use the qr code if i dont want ot use HP solution. Reason why i want to use UP is that i dont want to use any other tools.
So one more question did anyone knows if MS want to add secure release with PIN to Universal Print? I know it is difficult because there is a lot of models and manufdacturer for printers.
Thanks- PhilippAbendrothKMOct 21, 2024Brass ContributorDear all,
real print management and secure release, as well as followMe/PullPrint is more a part from additional print management solutions, and these are often addinola software, mostly on-premise, but now some true SaaS solution are on the market.
with these solutions, you would have a real user authentication on the print device and some more features like also scan to onedrive, SP Online, Mail etc.
it is more then difficult to include this to MS universal printing i would say, and the PIN release is one feature from IPP printing it self. as Jimmy wrote, the print data is already on the printer and the user needs to enter this PIN code for printing.
real secure/followMe print works a little different.
please let me know, if you need more details.
thanks!
