Surface Update as an application for multiple models

Are there any recent tutorials on how to build a single application to update multiple Surface models?  The link below is the best one I've found, but it is 4 years old and I would think there might be some changes/improvements that have been made over time.  We have over 8 different Surface models in our environment so getting the detection script correct will be key.  If this is still a valid process, I'll continue setting it up, just wanted to get some clarification.
