Surface type cover stopped working

I've owned a Surface pro 4 for years that I primarily use in hotels as a streaming device and it's been great for that.
Within the last year my surface keyboard began having issues where it wasn't being recognized, no illumination etc. I incorrectly assumed this was a keyboard issue so I purchased a new one. I continued to have issues with the keyboard not working 90% of the time. Sometimes it would work after boot and then stop working after minutes. It was acting very sporadic as it would work and then stop working or vice versa without rebooting, shutting down etc. I even noticed that it would occasionally work and then I'd close the keyboard cover and it would stop working. Of course I cleaned all the connection pins and made sure nothing appeared broken.

Last weekend I forgot my laptops on a business trip and found a Surface pro 6 i7 with pen and keyboard for $100 which seemed like a decent deal so I picked it up. Well as it turns out this device has the exact issues as my Surface pro 4.

I've worked in IT for 20+ years but unfortunately had a stroke last year which certainly affects my thinking. I've been beating my head against the wall trying to resolve this issue but I have yet to find a real fix. From what I'm finding other users are having the same issue but I haven't seen a real fix yet. I've tried rolling back and uninstalling surface type cover drivers, disabling the keyboard and re-enabling it in the BIOS, etc.

It seems almost impossible to me that Microsoft isn't aware of this issue or doesn't know a fix. It sure seems coincidental that Microsoft is recently selling a Bluetooth keyboard but hasn't posted anything about a current fix for users with the Surface type cover.

Any help is greatly appreciated. I feel like I'm going in circles on this one and am getting nowhere. I enjoy the form factor and ergonomics on the surface, hence why I've brought several of them but the fact that Microsoft likely knows about this issue and a fix but isn't sating anything other than suggestions to buy a BT keyboard is nonsense. This is likely ensuring I never buy another Microsoft device. Thank you Again.
