Moving teams chat history to a new tenant

Hi,

My organisation has recently moved our domain to a new 365 tenant and are telling me that my teams chat and channel history cannot be moved in the same way the email exchange has been.

Is this correct? Surely there is a way to migrate the teams data across aswell?

[you can tell from my desciption that im not an IT expert. I do have a really important project group chat history with a customer team that i really cant afford to lose]

I had to migrate Microsoft Teams chat history to a new tenant during a tenant-to-tenant move. I used the EdbMails Microsoft Teams Migration Tool for this.

In my case, it supported migrating 1:1 chats, group chats, and channel conversations along with Teams structure. The process was straightforward, and it helped move historical chat data that isn’t covered by native Microsoft options. I was able to verify the migrated data using the reports provided after the run.

Overall, it worked well for handling Teams chat history during a tenant migration.

Teams Chat Migration Between Tenants: Not Natively Supported

Unlike email, Teams chat and channel history can't be fully migrated between Microsoft 365 tenants using Microsoft’s built-in tools.

    What You Can Do:

    1. Export Chat Manually
    - Copy important messages or use the **Microsoft Compliance Center** (if enabled) to export chats.

    2. Use Third-Party Tools
    - Tools like BitTitan, or Quest can migrate some Teams data (channels, files, partial chat history).

    3. Request Read-Only Access
    - Ask IT to keep the old tenant accessible so you can refer to past chats.
