Sorting list by lookup field

I have a list that needs to lookup (connect) information to another list.  I had the ability to sort the list using the lookup field in other lists but now I cant.  Is there somewhere I can find out why this was changed in updates and any workarounds that have been flushed out (cant use custom developed).  I am trying to minimize the amount of information to be typed in that is associated to the other list.
