Sharepoint lists deleting and rearranging columns

Apologies if this is the wrong place to post, but why would a SharePoint list, with various columns, for some bizarre reason - no files being loaded into it - seemingly move data that has been entered and saved randomly between columns / blank columns that previously had data in...? Nobody seems to have accessed it in the interim and it happens each time?
