Renaming Files causes list to jump to top

Not sure if anyone else has had this issue. I have a long list of files saved in a SharePoint folder that I needed to manually rename. I found that as I went through the list, every time I renamed a file that was towards the bottom of the list when it was finished renaming it would automatically jump to the top of the list again.

This is more annoying than anything because I then would have to scroll all the way down to the bottom again making it quite difficult to maintain my place in the list I was working on.

Note this was not saved as a "list" it is just a bunch of files dumped into a folder. And I was working out of the browser in the SharePoint site.

SuBarNYC First off, I'd open the document library or folder with the files you're renaming. Next, I'd click the ellipsis (...) next to the current view name and select "Edit current view".

From there, I'd head to the "Sort" section and change the sort order to a column unaffected by renaming, such as "Name" or "Created", in your preferred order. Moreover, I could add extra sort columns if necessary. Subsequently, I'd click "OK" to save the modified view settings.

This way, by sorting on columns like "Name" or "Created", the list order should remain stable despite renaming files. However, if the issue persists after these changes, I'd recommend submitting a support ticket to Microsoft. There might be an underlying problem requiring their technical team's assistance.

having this trouble as well, it's awful and makes working with large libraries frustrating beyond belief and exponentially increases the time it takes to work with files
  • Check the sort order on the default view. If the sort is by Modified, descending, then every time you re-name a file, this is what will happen. If you don't want the order to change when you re-name the file, consider sorting by ID or another attribute that won't cause the view to re-order when you make an update.

I am having this same issue with my SharePoint library and it's driving me nuts.
I tried adding an ID column but this didn't help - every time I rename a document or even open a document, it jumps back up to the top of the list. I do have the name column sorted from A to Z as I need this view. What other attributes can I add that would solve the jumping to the top issue please?
      • Did you change the sort order by selecting Edit the current view? This will ensure that your sort order is “permanent” in the view you are using. Make sure that view is your default and you should not have the issue.
