Sad to say, no. It does have to do with internet connection as I think I read somewhere that keeping the document open must have a constant connection to the file, and should that connection be lost at any point in time, the error occurs.
Therefore after too many complaints about connectivity, we have forgone that way of using SharePoint.
Sucks though, as it was a great way to show transparency while thousands of miles away.
