Modern Search No Results - Classic search Works fine

I'm setting up a 2019 on premise farm with just two servers.   I have two web applications one for content, one for mysites.    The Modern search from the Homepage returns no Results for anything but when I switch to classic search everything is returned.    I'm stumped.  Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
