Item level permissions with column uniqueness enabled

Hello, I'm working on developing a canvas app that uses a SharePoint List to hold the data. Some of the columns need to have unique values enforced. I would also like to enable item level permissions so that users can only read and edit the items that they have created. However, these two features seem to not work together and I get an error message whenever I try to enable item-level permissions. I can't seem to find any details on why this is the case. I would love to have insight on why this is and maybe get some tips on how I can get around this for my app.
