The external data column in SPO does not cover the scenario you have here unfortunately...indeed, I would advice to avoid the use of that column that is based on a service Microsoft has not updated for years.

ChrisCloud instead I would look at doing this with an app in Power Apps where you can have multiple data sources can filter a gallery of items and so on.
