Effect of changing the default link type

I know it's possible to change the default link type users get for sharing as described here: https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Change-the-default-link-type-when-users-get-links-for-sharing-81b763af-f301-4226-8842-8d13bd07face?ui=en-US&rs=en-US&ad=US

Our SharePoint site collection worked so far with the Internal option but that contradicts with how our permission structure is set up. We would like to change it to Direct.

What are the effects of such change? (Besides the intended one of course). How the existing links will be affected?

Thank you in advance!

  • Hi Rita Kiss,

When you change the default sharing link, there is no change to any existing links. It just controls what shows up by default in the sharing dialog. The policy does affect your entire organization though so other SharePoint sites (which are currently also getting Internal links by default) will also start defaulting to Direct.

    Thanks,
