I was able to copy the project and start again.

It is not possible to remove the Group once you have selected it - this is documented here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/video-share-a-roadmap-with-a-group-d3ecd978-560d-41e3-b75f-7774386fb701
All you can do it is remove the users from the Group via the Microsoft 365 Groups UI.
