Yes, Project has always had a feature that preserves the original or interim snapshots of the plan and its called a baseline.

When a plan is first developed but just before starting execution, go to, Project > Schedule Group > Set Baseline. Project will capture several fields (Start, Finish, Cost, etc.) and store those in a set of Baseline fields. Those saved fields are then used as comparison between the original plan and the current schedule. They also form the basis for earned values metrics.
