Rescheduling unachieved task
Hi John,
To simplify I only kept 1 task / 1 resources and cleaned the entire project file:
AUTOMATIC SCHEDULE/FIXED WORK/NO CONSTRAINT DATE
WORK = 100 md / % COMPLETED 90 % ==> remaining work 10 md
Task assigned to one single resource 100% available
I UPDATED THE ENTIRE PROJECT asking to reschedule the remaining work after August 7th
Result is not correct : the task finish date is set to October 27th !
Looking at the resource allocation : +/- 70 md assigned for a remaining work of 10 md !
I do not know where I missed something ...
Thanks for your support
Philippe
The first screen shot shows a task start date of 4/17/23 and a duration of 125 days. With a Standard calendar that should give a finish date of 10/6/23 but your screen shot shows a finish date of 10/27/23. That tells me there must be some holidays or other non-working time during that time span.
The screen shot also shows a work content of 100 days yet the resource is assigned 100% so the work should be 125 days. Perhaps the resource work calendar is different from the Project calendar.
The plan is updated to reschedule uncompleted work after 8/7/23 but that will have no impact on the task because the task is already 90% complete so uncompleted work is already scheduled beyond that date, namely the last couple weeks of Sept and the first week of Oct.
Everything works okay for me. What exactly are you expecting?

The duration is the one calculated by Project according the the work of 100 md taking into account some holidays... => OK
No holidays in the coming weeks/months in the CALENDAR nor at RESOURCE level
Today (8/7/23) I set the % completed to 90% that gives a remaining work of 10 md.
After the "UPDATE Project after 8/7", PROJECT should show a FINISH DATE on 8/21 (10 days remaining work starting tomorrow 8/8).
If you look at the work assigned to Resource 1 as of tomorrow you see much more than the 10 remaining days of work !

Sorry but I don't understand your statement about the duration value being the one calculated by Project. Duration is the number of working days between the task start and finish. If there are no holidays then the start and finish dates will be 10/17/23 and 10/6/23 respectively, and that is 125 working days. If a single resource is assigned 100% to that task the work content will also be 125 days.
So let's say the work is 100 days and 90% is complete. Indeed that leaves 10 days of work. BUT, that's 10 days of work, NOT 10 days of completion. That's why the 10 final work days occurs out in October, well after the 8/7/23 update.
I think the issue is confusing duration and work. It would be better to express work content in hours, not days. It makes it easier to see what's going on.
However, I think what you are trying to do is to update the plan such that actual work is pulled back to the 8/7/23 date. First, set the Status Date to 8/7/23. Then go to, File > Options > Advanced group and set the options as shown here:
Now when you claim 90% completion on the task it will produce this: Note, I also changed work to show as hours instead of days so 125 days of duration with the Standard calendar yields 1000 hours of work.
Also, note the finish date is moved up with remaining work of 100 hours and remaining duration of 12.5 days.
