Projects wants a .mpp file

Hi all,
I am working on a Project online and want to import a SharePoint list into the project to build a gannt chart. In project I choose "new" and choose "import". The prompt request is to upload a .mpp file. I want to upload either an SP list or an Excel file. I don't see where I have that option. Any suggestions about what I am missing? In summary, I cannot upload an existing file to start outlining the project. I've tried the solutions presented online, step by step, and keep running into the requirement for a .mpp file. Thx.

From the description of your problem, it sounds like you are using Project for the Web, and NOT Project Online. Assuming that is the case, the only way to import an existing project into Project for the Web is from an MPP file created in Microsoft Project. It is not possible to import a project into Project for the Web from a SharePoint tasks list or from an Excel workbook. Probably the best you can do at this point is to use copy and paste to move the data from the SharePoint tasks list into a new blank Project for the Web project. Sorry, but hope this helps.

Another option maybe - if one realllly wanted to automate the whole process - use power automate to put the SP list into a MPP then use the import mpp feature to get it to PFTW.
