Project Online-Features and core differences with MS Project 2019
- May 14, 2024
Hello Molalenge ,
Project Online features can be seen here in the service description: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/office365/servicedescriptions/project-online-service-description/microsoft-project-online-service-description
Project Online adds many features to your Project Management solution when compared to standalone Project Professional. Essentially moving to Project Online will give you a central database and web app for all of your project data. Enabling to you have people work in a consistent way (centralised custom fields, templates etc.) and easily report on the data that users have entered. Here is a blog post series I wrote many years ago for getting started with Project Online, it will help you understand the key features: https://pwmather.wordpress.com/2014/07/22/getting-started-with-projectonline-round-up-ps2013-office365-project-ppm-sharepointonline-pm-sp2013/

Hello Molalenge ,
When you say MS Project 2019, is this Project Desktop 2019 or Project Server 2019? Assuming it is Project Server 2019, the only real different in terms of specific Project features is reporting. In Project Online you have the OData Reporting API where as on-premises Project Server 2019 you have access to the SQL reporting schema in the database plus the OLAP cube. This is mentioned here: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/project/planning-project-server-and-project-online-for-business-decision-makers#business-intelligence-in-project-server-and-project-online
