It's 2023 now and the https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/roadmap?filters=Microsoft%20Project%2CIn%20development
Looks like Microsoft is not investing in Project Online any more. 4+ years after this discussion was coming up there is still no modern look or nice Microsoft Teams integration for Project Online (not Project on the Web).
Very disappointing.
