In Task Usage or Resource Usage, is it possible to summarize hours by group through Custom Fields?

Unfortunately, no. Custom fields are not timescaled. There might be some tricks you could use with manual entry into extra baseline fields, but I haven't really tried that to see if it's even feasible.
