I'm missing something very fundamental ... sorry for the newbee question

I don't see how Planner and Project integrate, do they?

My recommendation would be for you to continue using Microsoft Project with Project Online, as those tools will give you all the functionality you seek. Project for the Web (project.microsoft.com) is a low-end, very simple project management application that lacks most of the features of Microsoft Project and Project Online, so I recommend that you avoid this tool entirely. Also, there is no two-way integration between Microsoft Project and Planner, nor is there any integration between Planner and Project for the Web. Sorry, but hope this helps.
