Planner for Actions

Hi I used to use project for the web for project plans and planner for individual actions that are more detailed and would not be on high-level project plans. Whereas now that Planner has replaced project, any time I want to add just actions, is it adding to the overall grid timeline view which I do not want. 

Is there something I am missing or is actions now handled somewhere else?
