+1 to get the smart background option back.
Workaround to use light mode : you have to set it up in your web browser settings (not in Outlook Web)

Not following. You're saying that settings in Chrome will make the microsoft site deliver a page differently? Seems sus.

Websites following the browser/system theme is not unheard of. What *IS* unheard of is websites FORCING you to follow the browser/system theme. Normally, there is an option for Light/Dark/System in any (every?) web application. Microsoft, in their abundant wisdom, have done away with this because they evidently believe their dark-mode theme is a sight to behold.
