General Formatting
Is it possible to have basic formatting options for the Notes and Comments on a task? Bold, underline, hyperlinks, bulleted lists, etc.
Hard to add any meaningful notes or comments to a task when you are limited. This is so basic and simple it doesn't make any sense.

I have been getting other keyboard shortcuts by searching Copilot. Like the following consider a similar search if you are having issues too. I agree on the frustrations... Even the answer below is not perfect but at least I figured out how to fix bullets gone bad.
As of now, Microsoft Planner's Notes box does not support rich text formatting, including indenting bullet points directly within the app. Here's what you can do:
Current Workarounds
Use Keyboard Shortcuts for Bullets:
You can add bullet points using Ctrl + Shift + 8.
Numbered lists use Ctrl + Shift + 7 1.
Indenting Bullets:
Unfortunately, pressing Tab does not indent bullets in Planner Notes like it does in Word or OneNote.
There is no native support for multilevel bullet lists or indentation in the Notes box 2.
Use External Editors:
You can format your notes in Microsoft Word or OneNote, then copy and paste them into Planner. However, this works inconsistently—sometimes formatting is lost or the Notes box becomes uneditable 1.
Third-Party Tools:
Some users have mentioned apps like “Planner Notes + Rich Text”, but availability and reliability are unclear1.
What's ComingMicrosoft announced in 2023 that rich text formatting for Planner Notes is in development, including support for bold, underline, hyperlinks, and bullet formatting. However, as of mid-2025, this feature has not yet been fully rolled out

Has Microsoft updated this yet? It's so frustrating to use Planner with no formatting!
I've tried copying and pasting a table from Word and it works 70% of the time. Then I get errors, or I can't type inside the Notes section, or it doesn't update.
I've tried saving a "template" task with table and it works only hit or miss. So annoying when I do all the work, only for it not to save!

I think MS needs to add some Word features like format painter, and other related font features to make it work.

Any update on this?
I took up the suggestion to use Word to create and format a table so I (theoretically) could copy it into the Notes field and type into it but once it's saved once, it can't be used again.

Hi hunterjackson,
Rich text formatting for Planner notes is a highly requested feature, and Microsoft is aware of the need for it.
In June 2023, Microsoft announced that they are working on adding rich text formatting to Planner notes. This feature is still under development, but it is expected to be released in the near future.
In the meantime, there are a few workarounds that you can use to format your Planner notes:
- Use keyboard shortcuts. You can use the following keyboard shortcuts to format your text:
- Bold: Ctrl+B
- Italic: Ctrl+I
- Underline: Ctrl+U
- Numbered list: Ctrl+Shift+7
- Bulleted list: Ctrl+Shift+8
- Use a rich text editor. You can copy and paste your Planner notes into a rich text editor, such as Microsoft Word, to format them. Then, copy and paste the formatted text back into Planner.
- Use a third-party app. There are a number of third-party apps that can help you to format your Planner notes. For example, the app "Planner Notes + Rich Text" allows you to add rich text formatting to your Planner notes, as well as images, tables, and other elements.
I hope this information is helpful.

(LinkedIn)- pdestefanisIron ContributorSuggesting "copy and paste your Planner notes into a rich text editor, such as Microsoft Word, to format them" is a bit too much. Microsoft is really dropping the ball on this one.
Where are these third-party apps for Planner, anyway? I'm looking for "Planner Notes + Rich Text" but so far no results.- _jindrich_Copper Contributor
pdestefanis I'm working on switching from Trello to Planner
I am so disappointed.
It's just my opinion, but it's really very bad to use.
